Hooker's Sea Lions.


You will see the sea lions at the beach, the sea lions mum gives birth to the pups in the middle of December. Pups are baby sea lions, they eat octopus and also they eat fish. They weigh up to 400kg and other sea lions teach them how to swim and find food.

Sea Lions live in Stewart Island and Auckland Island. When there is something wrong they go to their safe tree which are Rata trees.

Females live in large sociable groups. Female sea lions have lighter coats than males. Some sea lions will be killed by sharks each December, those who survive return to Auckland Island.

Sea Lion’s change colour as they grow up, they change from brown to blackish brown. Once they were hunted for oil, but killing sea lions is now against the law.
