Weekly Activity - Activity 3 ( Day 7 )

Learn - This year two new sports are being added to the Paralympic Games. They are canoeing and triathlon. In the triathlon the athletes must swim 750 metres, cycle for 20 kilometres, and then run for 5 kilometres. Paralympic athletes may also compete in other sports including archery, boccia, football, judo, powerlifting, rowing, sailing, swimming, sitting volleyball, track cycling, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing, wheelchair rugby, and wheelchair tennis. To learn more about all of the Paralympic sports, please visit the 2016 Paralympic Games website.

Imagine that you are on the Paralympic Committee and you have been asked to create one new sport to add to the competition for this year. Use your awesome imagination to design a brand new Paralympic sport. Please remember that some of the athletes will not be able to walk or run and others may be blind or deaf. On your blog, please write:

The name of the sport that hasn't been used in the Olympics is Squash. Squash is a racket sport played by two or four players in a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball. The rule of this game is the players must alternate in striking the ball with their racket and hit the ball onto the playable surfaces of the four walls of the court. Second rule is that after they score the only have 5 minutes to warm up for the next round. The last rule is that the ball may be warmed up by on of the players at the beginning of the game.

Thanks and have a great holiday!!!

  1. Firstly, congratulations, Joshua on making it all the way through the Winter Learning Journey programme. That is amazing! Well done.

Secondly, thank you for your informative post re: squash. When I first read it I was surprised to see that squash wasn't included as an Olympic sport but I quickly did my research and learned that you were exactly right. I was genuinely amazed! Apparently they are going to try to have it re-introduced into the 2024 Olympics but, as of now, it is not an Olympic sport. Do you think that it would be a good idea to re-introduce it into the games? What about the paralympic games, particularly given that many of the athletes have significant physical disabilities. Would they be able to play the game?

I will look forward to checking your blog again in a few days to see if you've had time to respond to any of my comments!

In the meantime, congratulations on completing the journey. You are the first student from any of the schools to finish all seven days. Way to go!!

    Best, Rachel
